NJTO  ENDORSES  27  CANDIDATES  FOR ASSEMBLY

October 2009

Dear Tenant Leader/Member/Activist,

Below is our list of endorsed candidates for the New Jersey Assembly by district. If you do not know your district, you can find it on the New Jersey Legislature website by clicking on:

http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp

It is extremely important that these candidates WIN.  In the past, New Jersey legislatures have been so anti-tenant that we spent most of our time defending rights we already have and fighting off attacks on those rights.  In the last couple of elections, we have been able to change the anti-tenant Senate/Assembly to one where it was possible to get our Security Deposit Bill and our Anti-Lockout Bill passed, but we suffered a set back on our rights to Homestead Rebates, except for senior citizen and disabled tenants.

We have got our work cut out for us.  When it comes to pro-tenant bills, most votes are very close, and there are lots of anti-tenant bill we must defend against.  The dangerous bill (A-1628) that would allow landlords to install sub-meters in tenants apartments and charge us separately for water and sewerage is the most threatening example because of how hard the landlords are pushing for it.  Legislators are much more likely to respond to NJTO positions if they know tenant voters have actually voted for them!  We need to elect all of our endorsed candidates to be able to pass more pro-tenant bills and stop the anti-tenant bills.

If you have any questions, please call the office.  (D) means the candidate is running as a Democrat; (R) means the candidate is running as a Republican.

We have chosen candidates we believe will best serve tenants interests.  They are worthy not only of your votes but of your work on their behalf.  Please share this with your neighbors.

Yours truly,

Matthew B. Shapiro
President

P.S., You should know that this year we observed a strict policy of only endorsing candidates who have filled out and returned our questionnaire on tenants' rights issues (and gave good answers and have good records).  So this year's list is smaller than in the past.  There are definitely some incumbents who are good friends of the NJTO, but did not send in a questionnaire, and are therefore not on the list.
