CONTACT THE LEGISLATURE AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT THE ABOVE TWO BILLS.

Contact your Senator and Assembly Members to insist that tenants get their fair share of this tax rebate. All tenants including seniors, juniors, and everyone else are entitled to a property tax rebate all tenants are tax payers.  All tenants!

If anyone tries to tell you that tenants under rent control don't suffer from property tax increases, tell them that property tax increases are probably the major reason for the very high rent increases we suffer under the rent control laws in most New Jersey towns.

You can find the phone numbers of your Senators and Assembly Members on the New Jersey Legislature's official Website. Click on Legislature below.

NJTO wins legislative
VICTORY on Homestead Rebate for tenants.

After an intensive grassroots lobbying effort, the NJTO was successful in
getting tenants included in the homestead rebate / millionaires' tax bill.
Both the Assembly version (A-100) and the Senate version (S-1678) were
released from their respective committees with amendments that add $50 to
the homestead rebates that tenants currently receive.  Senior & disabled
tenants earning under $70,000 will now get from $150 to $825 (instead of 100
to 775).  Non-senior tenants under $100,000 in income and senior tenants
between $70,000 and $100,000 will now get $150 instead of $100.

At a cost of $42,000,000 to the State, this is certainly a legislative
victory for the New Jersey Tenants Organization.  Although it is not
anywhere near tenants' fair share of the $800,000,000 to be raised by the
Millionaires' tax, it is much better than zero, and it is definitely the
most we could get in the current budgetary and political climate in Trenton.
Most important, it recognizes that tenants are property tax payers!

The bill was passed by both the Senate and Assembly on June 21, and the Governor signed it on June 28, 2004.
